7.21.2015 – 2015 marks 30 years of creativity for Luckham Creative… but my creativity goes back even further when it comes to photography.

I don’t recall when I first started taking pictures, early 70s I think, and I still have my first camera, a Kodak Six-20 ‘Brownie’ C box camera that my Mum passed on to me, I loved that camera, I took so many great photos with it… eventually it developed a light leak, the last photos taken would have been at an air show in 1977, so it had a pretty good life! I moved on to SLRs after that, the Pentax K1000, a completely manual camera, so I had to learn about apertures and shutter speed, no more ‘point and shoot’ which is pretty much what the box camera was. I then got a job working in a camera store and was able to buy my next camera at a pretty sweet discount, a Pentax MX. My first published photos were shot with that camera, a truck vs car accident I happened on that was published in the Vancouver Sun and British Punk band 999 that was published in The Peak, Simon Fraser University’s student newspaper. That camera was one of my most prized possessions for a very long time, it travelled with me, and went to every concert I could possibly take it to. It’s given me so many wonderful memories and I still have it today.

It was at the new millennium that I began to dabble with digital cameras, the college I was at purchased a few Sony Mavica’s for use in the Design program I was teaching, just point and shoots, but the draw to a camera that I could shoot with and not have the costs associated with a film camera was irresistible, there was no turning back at this point. It wasn’t until 2004 though that I completely switched over after working out west and getting my hands on a Canon Rebel. I was on Salt Spring Island and would go out on my bike every morning and shoot non stop! At first, I bought a Kodak CX7525 point and shoot and when I finally broke down and bought a DSLR in 2008 I stayed with Pentax and got the Pentax K20D which sadly died an untimely death in 2010. I upgraded to the Pentax K-5 which is what I use today. In 2013 I bought a Sony RX100 II, due to it’s compact nature, very high resolution and low light applications. Today I don’t go anywhere without both cameras.

Photography was always a favourite past time, it became a bit of a business when I put my love for photography and music together and was earning a little bit of money shooting bands. It wasn’t until I switched to digital that I started to add photography to the services I offer through Luckham Creative. Today it’s my favourite thing to do… go out and shoot, whether shooting in India for a client, shooting in the U.K. for a book I plan to publish, shooting at music festivals because that for me is the ultimate shooting experience, or just shooting for fun… you’ll see me out with my camera more often than not!
