r i n t D e s i g n Logo/Identity Design – Your Company's Identity, whether a simple wordmark or a custom logo, will often be seen long before you or any of your staff meet a potential customer, thus your identity must act as an ambassador to your business. There will be no explanation as to what your logo means or represents, and in some cases, the person looking at your logo may not even know what your company does. Whenever your logo or wordmark is used, on business cards, letterhead, signage or a web site, it must be capable of leaving as good a first impression as you would yourself. A complete Identity Design includes business cards, letterhead and envelopes as well as Identity Guidelines, how your company logo should be used in other print materials. So, what do you need, a Wordmark, or a Custom Logo? A Wordmark is a text-only typographic treatment of your company name - its a company's signature, if you will, made from just the name of the company. The type face, style, colour and layout of the text creates a signature by which the company becomes known. A Custom Logo is a graphical element or icon combined with a wordmark - like a wordmark, its a symbol which represents a company or product. A logo can be just a graphic or a combination of text and a graphic. A logo is sometimes made up of a graphic, the company name and a tag line or slogan. If you're in need of a new logo, a wordmark or a complete identity, or just wish to update and modernize your existing identity, take a look through the identity section of my on-line portfolio, and then call me or send an email and let's discuss how I may be able to assist you. Print Design – Once you have your identity established, it’s important to carry that look and feel through to all your other print material. Professionally designed print materials are also a big part of making a good and lasting impression. I can design your print materials or layout and typeset to your specifications, making sure the digital files print exactly as expected, due to my more then 23 years of experience. I can also create custom artwork for your next print project, whether its technical illustrations, artistic renderings or cartoons, Ill apply my talent to the job... and if its something I dont do, I know someone who does! If and when necessary, I will bring in the right illustrator or cartoonist to get the job done. My on-line portfolio includes many samples of print design and production, from stationery design to newsletters, magazines, product packaging or even posters and billboards! Take a look at what I do and then give me a call and let’s get started. (top)
Web Design – I don't just build web sites, I design web sites and Ive been doing so since 1996. From presentation - the impression your site gives, and structure - the code and technology, to navigation - how visitors find what theyre looking for without getting lost! Web site design is not just the look and feel, its presenting your content in the best way to get your message across, all within a browser friendly structure that is easy to navigate... making the difference between a site that sits on the internet, and a site that's visited on the internet. Another area not to be overlooked in building a web site is Search Engine Optimization (SEO). This is the process of adjusting the content, coding, keywords and even design of your web site to achieve the best rankings on the major search engines such as Google and Yahoo. Check out my ranking on Google when you type in 'Ottawa Designer' (this will open in a new window, and is currently coming up for Dedicated Desktop). If you're looking for these kind of results, with a web site that is well designed, take a moment to browse through some of my web design work in my on-line portfolio, and then give me a call and let's talk. Photography and Image Editing is now a much bigger part of the creative services I offer to all my clients. Photography had always been a small part of my business, but a very large part of my life... whether shooting air shows or camping trips through the U.S. with the Brownie Box Camera I had as a kid, or shooting Concerts throughout the 70's and 80's with my Pentax 35mm SLR, or shooting around my neighbourhood with a digital point and shoot, or using the fanciest digital camera of the day to capture great works of art to be reproduced as giclées (fine art prints), I love photography! My first published photograph, in 1980, was of a concert by British New Wave/Punk band 999, and my first exhibit, in that same year, was a collection of my Concert Photography including Yes, Tom Petty, Dire Straits and David Bowie... all shot on high speed recording film with that 35mm Pentax and a fast 1.4 lens! Even though I started providing services in Image Editing with Photoshop as early as 1990, I didn't actually start shooting digital until 2001. Regardless of the tool or the software though, my passion is for shooting the things I see that give me pause... pause enough to point, compose and shoot. It is through my photography and image editing that I am now putting more focus on what it is I love to do, and that is... being creative! Photography – I can shoot the photographs youll need to spice up the print piece I design for you, or the shots that will add life to the web site I create, or I can bring in a portrait photographer to shoot the photos you may need for the annual report or brochure I’m working on. Examples of my photography can be found in the Photography section of my on-line portfolio, or at A View from Here, a collection of original photography and fine art by Ottawa Photographers. (top)
Image Editing – Ive been working with the image editing program Adobe Photoshop since it's first release for the Macintosh computer back in 1990, and prior to that I was using another program called Digital Darkroom. Initially, I was using these programs just to clean up images, but over the years I went from doing the possible, such as simple colour corrections and deletions, to the impossible, such as photo merges that replace parts of an image with something else, or merging multiple images to create a whole new, surreal scene. From the practical to the not so practical, youll see examples of my image editing in the Image Editing section of my on-line portfolio. I have had a lot of really great response/feedback on some of my image editing work, so in addition to providing this service to my web and print design clients I also do commissioned work now. I can shoot the photography and then edit, or you supply the photographs for me to edit. I had one client supply me with photos of her son and his girlfriend in superhero costumes... and I then made them fly! And as you can see on the right, cloning is not as impossible as you might think! I'm only limited by your imagination... take a look at my portfolio samples and give me a call. (top)
