I’m always surprised when I'm sharing ideas and someone asks “Where do you get all those ideas?”. As a graphic designer, that's my job - I work with clients to develop ideas first, and then creatively and technically make them happen! Whether a logo, a complete identity design, print collateral or a web site, I can take your next project from concept, through design and production, to final pre-press and/or the internet.

Luckham Creative produced a full set of branded materials for RD Consulting, from stationery to website. Julian had the ability to deliver initial proofs that were right on the money the first time. The process was quick and the final result was great. Rhonda Douglas, President, RD Consulting, Ottawa, ON

Logo/Identity Design – Your company's identity, whether a simple wordmark or a custom logo (see "Wordmark or Logo?" in the side bar), will often be seen long before you or any of your staff meet a potential customer, thus your identity must act as an ambassador to your business. There will be no explanation as to what your logo means or represents, and in some cases, the person looking at your logo may not even know what your company does. Whenever your logo or wordmark is used, on business cards, letterhead, signage or a web site, it must be capable of leaving as good a first impression as you would yourself. A complete Identity Design includes business cards, letterhead and envelopes.

If you need a new logo, wordmark or a complete identity design, or just wish to update and modernize your existing identity, take a look through the identity design section of my on-line portfolio, and then call or send an email and let's discuss how I may be able to assist you. (top)

Print Design – Once you have your identity established, it’s important to carry that look and feel through to all your other print material. Professionally designed print materials are also a big part of making a good and lasting impression. I can design your print materials or layout and typeset to your specifications, making sure the digital files print exactly as expected, due to my 25 years of experience in the print industry. I can also create custom artwork for your next print project, whether it’s technical illustrations, artistic renderings or cartoons. If it’s something I don’t do, I will bring in the right artist to get the job done.

You will find many samples of print design and production, from stationery design to newsletters, magazines, product packaging, posters and billboards in my on-line portfolio. Take a look at what I do and then give me a call and let’s get started. (top)

Web Design – I don't merely build web sites - I design web sites and I’ve been doing so since 1996. From presentation - the impression your site gives, and structure - the code and technology, to navigation - how visitors find what they’re looking for (without getting lost!). Web site design is not just the look and feel, it’s presenting your content in the best way to get your message across, all within a browser friendly structure that is easy to navigate... making the difference between a site that merely sits on the internet, and a site that's visited on the internet. Another area not to be overlooked in building a web site is Search Engine Optimization (SEO), the process of adjusting the content, coding, keywords and even design of your web site to achieve the best rankings on the major search engines such as Google and Yahoo. Take a look at my own rankings on Google by typing in 'Ottawa Designer' (this will open in a new window, you'll see both Luckham Creative and my old company name, Dedicated Desktop).

If you're looking for a well designed web site with good search engine ranking, take a moment to browse through some of my web design work in my on-line portfolio, and then give me a call and let's talk. (top)

Wordmark or Logo?
A wordmark is a text-only typographic treatment of your company name - think of it as your company's signature. The type face, style, colour and layout of the text creates a signature by which the company becomes recognized. A logo is a graphical element or icon combined with a wordmark - like a wordmark, it’s a symbol which represents a company or product. A logo can be just a graphic or a combination of text and a graphic. A logo is sometimes made up of a graphic, the company name and a tag line or slogan.

I'm thrilled with the logo you've come up with. The illustration is perfect. The colour is good, and when I cover up the text with my hands, the graphic looks great all by itself. The message it conveys is clear. And that tag line works well with it. Thank you for understanding what we needed.

Photography has always been a large part of my life - my first published photograph, in 1980, was of a concert by British New Wave/Punk band 999, and my first exhibit three years later, was a collection of my Concert Photography including Yes, Tom Petty, Dire Straits and David Bowie. Photography is now a service I provide to add visual content to my client's web sites and/or print pieces, or as a stand alone service. Image Editing is a service I've been providing since 1990, the year Adobe Photoshop was introduced.

Julian’s knowledge of colour and design in a variety of media keeps me coming back... he has demonstrated an amazing skill for staying on top of technology, while allowing his flare for the creative to shine through! I’ve also had the pleasure to use Julian’s fabulous photographic skills on projects - a truly multi-talented individual! Donn Tarris, Tarris Innovations - Salt Spring Island, B.C.

Photography – I can shoot photographs to spice up the print piece you need, or the shots that will add life to your web site. Whatever your visual needs, local or on location, I can shoot what you need. Examples of my photography can be found in the Photography section of my on-line portfolio, or at my photography site, A View from Here. (top)

Image Editing – I’ve been working with Adobe Photoshop since its first release for the Mac in 1990, prior to that I used Digital Darkroom. Initially, I used these programs just to “clean up” images, but over the years I went simple colour corrections and deletions, to more complex editing such as photo merges that replace parts of an image with something else, or merging multiple images to create a whole new, surreal scene. From the practical to the whimsical, you’ll see examples of my image editing in the Image Editing section of my on-line portfolio. In addition to providing this service to my web and print design clients I also do commissioned work. I can shoot the photography and then edit, or edit your photos. One client supplied me with photos of her son and his girlfriend in superhero costumes... and I then made everyone believe they could fly! And as you can see in the sidebar, cloning is not as impossible as you might think! My only limit is your imagination... take a look at my portfolio samples, give me a call and let's make the impossible, possible. (top)

I can also assist you with your own in-house design and production, since 1990 I have provided training and consultation services to established design studios and print shops, as well as individuals, private companies and government agencies. I can be brought in for consulting, or to provide creative direction and/or training. I can also help to develop ideas and workable concepts, and then assist in creatively and technically making them happen! Past training and/or consulting clients have included Vancouver Community College, the International Academy of Design and Technology, CTC Train Canada, the Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA) in India, Statistics Canada, Natural Resources Canada and the Mitel Corporation. Project Rescue – Need help with a specific project? Call and ask about “Project Rescue”, where you get professional consultation and custom training to complete a specific project or on-going projects, knowing that the end result will be all that you hoped it would be. (top)

We wanted a user-friendly on-line calendar with a crisp look, but that conveyed important information on planning, reporting and accountability documents and events at the government, departmental and sector levels. With your involvement, we have reached this objective. Your concept of Project Rescue has proven to be invaluable in this project; by coming on-site to do a good part of the work, we were able to exchange feedback immediately and learn how the calendar works, so that we can update it as required.
