I’m always surprised when sharing ideas as part of a talk or a seminar, and someone asks “Where do you get all those ideas?”. Well, I'm a graphic designer and that’s what graphic designers do! I work with my clients to develop ideas first, and then creatively and technically make them happen! Whether a logo, a complete identity design, print collateral or a web site, I can take your next project from concept, through design and production, to final pre-press or the internet.

Logo/Identity Design – Your Company's Identity, whether a simple wordmark or a custom logo, will often be seen long before you or any of your staff meet a potential customer, thus your identity must act as an ambassador to your business. There will be no explanation as to what your logo means or represents, and in some cases, the person looking at your logo may not even know what your company does. Whenever your logo or wordmark is used, on business cards, letterhead, signage or a web site, it must be capable of leaving as good a first impression as you would yourself. A complete Identity Design includes business cards, letterhead and envelopes as well as Identity Guidelines, how your company logo should be used in other print materials.

So, what do you need, a Wordmark, or a Custom Logo? A Wordmark is a text-only typographic treatment of your company name - it’s a company's signature, if you will, made from just the name of the company. The type face, style, colour and layout of the text creates a signature by which the company becomes known. A Custom Logo is a graphical element or icon combined with a wordmark - like a wordmark, it’s a symbol which represents a company or product. A logo can be just a graphic or a combination of text and a graphic. A logo is sometimes made up of a graphic, the company name and a tag line or slogan.

If you're in need of a new logo, a wordmark or a complete identity, or just wish to update and modernize your existing identity, take a look through the identity section of my on-line portfolio, and then call me or send an email and let's discuss how I may be able to assist you. (top)

I'm thrilled with the logo you've come up with. The illustration is perfect. The colour is good, and when I cover up the text with my hands, the graphic looks great all by itself. The message it conveys is clear. And that tag line works well with it. Thank you for understanding what we needed. Amanda George, One Boy One Van Foundation - Ottawa, ON

Print Design – Once you have your identity established, it’s important to carry that look and feel through to all your other print material. Professionally designed print materials are also a big part of making a good and lasting impression. I can design your print materials or layout and typeset to your specifications, making sure the digital files print exactly as expected, due to my more then 23 years of experience.

I can also create custom artwork for your next print project, whether it’s technical illustrations, artistic renderings or cartoons, I’ll apply my talent to the job... and if it’s something I don’t do, I know someone who does! If and when necessary, I will bring in the right illustrator or cartoonist to get the job done.

My on-line portfolio includes many samples of print design and production, from stationery design to newsletters, magazines, product packaging or even posters and billboards! Take a look at what I do and then give me a call and let’s get started. (top)

Luckham Creative produced a full set of branded materials for RD Consulting, from stationery to website. Julian had the ability to deliver initial proofs that were right on the money the first time. The process was quick and the final result was great. Rhonda Douglas, President, RD Consulting

Web Design – I don't just build web sites, I design web sites and I’ve been doing so since 1996. From presentation - the impression your site gives, and structure - the code and technology, to navigation - how visitors find what they’re looking for without getting lost! Web site design is not just the look and feel, it’s presenting your content in the best way to get your message across, all within a browser friendly structure that is easy to navigate... making the difference between a site that sits on the internet, and a site that's visited on the internet.

Another area not to be overlooked in building a web site is Search Engine Optimization (SEO). This is the process of adjusting the content, coding, keywords and even design of your web site to achieve the best rankings on the major search engines such as Google and Yahoo. Check out my ranking on Google when you type in 'Ottawa Designer' (this will open in a new window, and is currently coming up for Dedicated Desktop). If you're looking for these kind of results, with a web site that is well designed, take a moment to browse through some of my web design work in my on-line portfolio, and then give me a call and let's talk. Julian is very detail oriented and creative in web design. His knowledge of this entire process is outstanding. He is very personable and easy to get along with. His rates are reasonable and he always goes above and beyond one's requirements. Tracy Porcari, Ashton Station Creative Group - Ottawa, ON

Photography and Image Editing is now a much bigger part of the creative services I offer to all my clients. Photography had always been a small part of my business, but a very large part of my life... whether shooting air shows or camping trips through the U.S. with the Brownie Box Camera I had as a kid, or shooting Concerts throughout the 70's and 80's with my Pentax 35mm SLR, or shooting around my neighbourhood with a digital “point and shoot”, or using the fanciest digital camera of the day to capture great works of art to be reproduced as giclées (fine art prints), I love photography! My first published photograph, in 1980, was of a concert by British New Wave/Punk band 999, and my first exhibit, in that same year, was a collection of my Concert Photography including Yes, Tom Petty, Dire Straits and David Bowie... all shot on high speed recording film with that 35mm Pentax and a fast 1.4 lens! Even though I started providing services in Image Editing with Photoshop as early as 1990, I didn't actually start shooting digital until 2001. Regardless of the tool or the software though, my passion is for shooting the things I see that give me pause... pause enough to point, compose and shoot. It is through my photography and image editing that I am now putting more focus on what it is I love to do, and that is... being creative!

Photography – I can shoot the photographs you’ll need to spice up the print piece I design for you, or the shots that will add life to the web site I create, or I can bring in a portrait photographer to shoot the photos you may need for the annual report or brochure I’m working on. Examples of my photography can be found in the Photography section of my on-line portfolio, or at A View from Here, a collection of original photography and fine art by Ottawa Photographers. (top)

Julian’s knowledge of colour and design in a variety of media keeps me coming back... he has demonstrated an amazing skill for staying on top of technology, while allowing his flare for the creative to shine through! I’ve also had the pleasure to use Julian’s fabulous photographic skills on projects - a truly multi-talented individual! Donn Tarris, Tarris innovations - Salt Spring Island, B.C.
Image Editing – I’ve been working with the image editing program Adobe Photoshop since it's first release for the Macintosh computer back in 1990, and prior to that I was using another program called Digital Darkroom. Initially, I was using these programs just to “clean up” images, but over the years I went from doing the possible, such as simple colour corrections and deletions, to the impossible, such as photo merges that replace parts of an image with something else, or merging multiple images to create a whole new, surreal scene. From the practical to the not so practical, you’ll see examples of my image editing in the Image Editing section of my on-line portfolio. I have had a lot of really great response/feedback on some of my image editing work, so in addition to providing this service to my web and print design clients I also do commissioned work now. I can shoot the photography and then edit, or you supply the photographs for me to edit. I had one client supply me with photos of her son and his girlfriend in superhero costumes... and I then made them fly! And as you can see on the right, cloning is not as impossible as you might think! I'm only limited by your imagination... take a look at my portfolio samples and give me a call. (top)

Julian’s highly professional and methodical approach to any project he undertakes is unwavering. When asked to come aboard for a particular project, be it to calibrate the colours of a complex photo montage (that ends up printing exactly as expected - thanks to his extensive experience in pre-press!) or to transfer the look and feel of a printed piece to the Web (fully tested and bug-free), he gets it done. Jean Brunette, Innovacom Marketing & Communication - Hull, QC

I can also assist with your own in-house design and production. I have provided services to established design studios, young ‘up and coming’ designers, as well as individuals, private companies and government agencies with in-house graphics departments. I can be brought in for consulting or to provide creative direction and/or training, or I can design templates from which you can build your web site or newsletter. I can also help to develop ideas and workable concepts and then assist in creatively and technically making them happen!

Whether you’re in the graphics industry or just want to become internet savvy or do more with your digital photographs, learning from a professional working in the field of print and web design can really make the difference. I’ve been offering training since 1990, having taught and designed courses for Vancouver Community College as well as the International Academy of Design and Technology in Ottawa. I presently provide contract training to ctc Train Canada. Students and clients have included print shops, design studios, government agencies and individuals looking to upgrade their computer skills. (top)

Julian was firm and fair with his students, willing to speak his mind honestly and always stressing the industry expectations. Many students commented on how valuable his experience, assistance and advice was. Catherine Orfald, International Academy of Design and Technology - Ottawa, ON

Seminars – Later this year I will be presenting public and private seminars/workshops on creativity. These seminars and workshops will include* Creative Web: Essentials for your Web Site, Creative Photography: Going Beyond Shooting Pictures, Creative Life: Adapting to a Digital Lifestyle. *more to come (top)

Project Rescue – Need help with a specific project? Call and ask about “Project Rescue”, where you get professional consultation and custom training to complete a specific project or on-going projects, knowing that the end result will be all that you hoped it would be. (top)

We wanted a user-friendly on-line calendar with a crisp look, but that conveyed important information on planning, reporting and accountability documents and events at the government, departmental and sector levels. With your involvement, we have reached this objective. Your concept of Project Rescue has proven to be invaluable in this project; by coming on-site to do a good part of the work, we were able to exchange feedback immediately and learn how the calendar works, so that we can update it as required. Hélène Leblanc, Natural Resources Canada - Ottawa, ON

I'm offering a new personalized service I call "Designer in Your Pocket", where you can purchase prepaid packages of my time at a discount. I used to offer web site maintenance packages to clients at a reduced rate if prepaid and a number of clients asked if they were limited to just doing maintenance with the package. In response to this I no longer offer web site maintenance, but instead I allow clients to purchase prepaid packages of my time at a much reduced rate.

So, ever wish you had a designer on staff? “Designer in Your Pocket” gives you a highly skilled creative person to do whatever needs to be done... create a logo, expand that in to your stationery, your web site, etc. I'll even take the time to help you plan out everything to make the most of the time you have. Packages start at $432 ($480 regular, 10% savings), the bigger the package the more you’ll save. Savings up to 37% over regular rates. Please call for more information. (top)
