Dad, are you there? Dad…

This is a photo I took the first year after my Dad passed away of a vintage microphone that belonged to him, a Shure Model 737A Monoplex Super-Cardioid Crystal Microphone Circa 1947.

CQ, this is W9GFO here. Come back?
CQ, CQ, this is W9GFO. Is anybody out there?

CQ, this is W9GFO, do you copy?
Dad, this is Ellie, come back?…
This is Eleanor Arroway, transmitting on 14.2 megahertz. Dad, are you there? Come back?

Dad, are you there? Dad, this is Ellie…

The scene I’m quoting from here is from the movie Contact, if you haven’t seen it you should rent it, it’s one of the most powerful movies, on so many levels, I’ve seen! After the main character’s father passes away, she goes on to her HAM radio, a hobby she shared with her father. I guess she, somehow, hoped he might be out there… listening!

My Dad passed away 9 years ago today, January 20th, he and I shared the same hobby, hobbies really, he instilled so much in me. I still miss him, not just once a year but all the time. For some reason I feel like I miss him more this year, I hope I see you again, I hope you’re out there… listening!

Dad, are you there? Come back?

Dad, are you there? Dad, this is Julian…
