Creative-Macs30 Years of Creativity– Nostalgic postings…

8.28.2015 – 2015 marks 30 years of creativity for Luckham Creative.

This is the last weekend in August and then September will be here, this year has been going by really fast I find. 30 years is a really long time though!

I don’t recall the exact date, but some time in August or September 30 years ago I started my own business. I didn’t have a computer at first, doing a magazine the old fashioned way, the mockup was done with scissors, glue, typography by hand, writing and drawings. Even when we went in to production the magazine itself was done a combination of new technology and old school.  The layout was done on a MacPlus in PageMaker, but there was a lot of traditional pasteup. Anyone remember the days of wax and PMTs?

The Mac you see above on the left was mine, but I was borrowing one before I could afford this one. It’s funny when I think about it, the banks wouldn’t give me a loan to buy a Mac and printer, they didn’t see it as a viable business. When I finally did get my own Mac I did so by maxing out both of my credit cards, and I earned most of it all back and paid off my credit cards before any interest had accrued. In your face bankers! Back in those days a Mac, hard drive and printer would set you back about 10 grand, and it had 2 Megabytes of RAM and a 20 Megabyte external hard drive… no cost was spared! Today my set up includes a MacBook Pro with 4 Gigabytes of RAM and a 1 Terabyte internal hard drive, an iMac with 16 Gigabytes of RAM and a 1 Terabyte internal hard drive, and two 2 Terabyte external hard drives, all of which cost less than 10 grand! How things have changed in 30 years. 30 Years ago I never gave any thought to what I might be doing in 30 years, but I don’t think I imagined all this! In spite of the difficulties over the years, and those that know me know how hard it’s been, I love what I do… there are some pretty big challenges ahead but I’ve made it through 30 years… pretty good for a non-viable business! I wonder what my computer will look like 30 years from now?
