A Day with KKPKP – Wastepickers of Pune India
Kagad Kach Patra Kashtakari Panchayat (KKPKP) is a trade union of waste pickers in Pune India. I spent an entire day with Waste Pickers in Pune, seeing every aspect of what a waste picker is and does in India. Waste Pickers work on the Uruli Landfill, provide Door to Door Recycling in the streets of Pune, run KKPKP’s Recycling Point and provide Street Container collection. As part of my day, I also visited a Slum in Pune where many of the Waste Pickers live, and went to a Patient’s Rights Forum where the availability of health care was discussed. These photos were taken at various locations in and around Pune, India in September 2009, while on a photo assignment for WIEGO (Women in Informal Employment: Gloabalizing and Organizing) and KKPKP.
