Weston-super-Mare, settlement upon the sea

Weston-super-Mare is a seaside resort in North Somerset and is on the Bristol Channel across from South Wales. Known for its Grand Pier and sandy beaches, WSM has a large tidal range with a low tide mark about a mile from the seafront, which makes it second only to the Bay of Fundy in Eastern Canada. The causeway you’ll see in some photos is actually a wall that holds back the sea to create an artifical lake, Marine Lake, so that beach goers would not have to walk the mile to the water. The causeway is also used to walk across to Knightstone Island, except at high tide. In one photo, you’ll see a hitching post on the beach, used to tie up donkeys that can be used to carry children out to the water’s edge at low tide. In the views out to sea you’ll see two islands known as Flat Holm and Steep Holm beyond which is the Atlantic Ocean and North America.

Weston-super-Mare and the surrounding area is where some of my family have lived for many years and where my Mother and my twin Brother and his family live today. I hope you enjoy this virtual visit to the beautiful seaside resort of Weston-super-Mare (Settlement upon the Sea).

*I’ve been referring to this trip as the B4 trip, Birthday + Brother + Bowie + Britain = Brilliant, as I decided to spend my birthday this year with my twin brother and to also treat myself to a ticket to the David Bowie is Exhibit in London, England.
