What if… There be Giants

What if Weekends: 52 Weeks Project 34/52

This Illusion is based on a TV show I enjoyed watching as a kid, “Land of the Giants”, about a space ship, the Spindrift, that crashes en route from LA to London on a strange alternate world where… there be Giants! The cast included the ship’s captain (Steve), co-pilot (Dan) and stewardess (Betty); an arrogant engineer (Mark);a sexy jet-setter Valerie); a young boy (Barry) and his dog Chipper; and a mysterious character, carrying an equally mysterious briefcase, known as Commander Fitzhugh. Together they battle the Giants, try to avoid being caught and repair their ship to return home. I didn’t cast all the parts in my illusion, but did my best. In this scene our heroes were up on the pool table just as two giants came in to play a game of pool… and how they’re having a friendly little wager on pocketing little people instead! One can’t help but laugh at the ‘predictions’ these kinds of shows make about what the future might be like, though shot from 1968 to 1970, the show is set in 1983. Land of the Giants was an Irwin Allen creation (Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Lost in Space, Time Tunnel, Swiss Family Robinson to name a few… and then the movies such as The Poseidon Adventure, Towering Inferno) that ran for two seasons and at the time was the most expensive show produced for television.

The tagline for the TV Show was “Mini-people – playthings in a world of giant tormentors!”. Sometimes I wonder if my enjoyment of the show came partially from being able to relate to the plight of the passengers and crew, as they are struggling in this strange world where they are being bullied by it’s inhabitants.

This was another fun shoot, the editing was a lot more difficult than I had hoped, the results aren’t great, but they’re not bad either. Who can catch some of the not so obvious elements I threw in? Or some edits that only those who were there might catch?
